I was also pleased to see the author realize that replacement of a living being is not immediate or required. But for a typical story time book, it was pretty depressing.
Goodbye Mousie Trade Paperback It’s never easy to broach the topic and especially with pets, it’s an important godbye. The book has easy text and easy vocabulary to help younger children better understand what has happened in the story.
He gets very mad at Mousie for dying, and then he feels very sad. I wrote about the progression of the universal feelings around death that even young children have-first denial, then sadness, then anger, then even some humor and then, yes, some acceptance. Great for the young child who’s lost a pet goldbye even for a child who has to deal with losing a family member or close friend to death. Also, I personally really appreciate the fact that this poor, mourning child is wearing mouse slippers.

But he wasn’t okay at the end of the book. The satisfying acts of burying Mousie and remembering his antics show children that grief is a normal feeling.
